The region was originally settled by Muskogean people. In the year 1698, the Spanish established a Presidio that gradually transformed into a modern city. The city is also nicknamed “The City of Five Flags” due to the five governments ruled it in its the history.

• Fort Barrancas: Also known as Fort San Carlos de Barrancas, it is a National Historic Landmark wherein the visitors can tour the fort and battery to learn about its history.
